Gustavo's Biography

My father was Cuban, my mother Puerto Rican.  My father’s family were politicians.  My mother’s father, his father and grandparents were artists.  I'm a Newyorican.  I have always wanted to do art.  In college I did literary art: poetry, translations, poetic theory.

In 2002 I had a stroke.  That is not good for talking.  I lost all power of speech.  Through a lot of study, I have gained some language.  When I lost it all, I had to decide if I was going to commit suicide or go on living.  The existential moment, the limit situation, made me ask, “What for?”  I have answered, “for art, for family, for friends.”

Before the internet, it was not easy leaving your family and your friends a legacy of your work.  It is not easy now, but it is workable.

Please enjoy looking through my art.  Each section reflects different periods and aspects of my life.  If you have any questions, please email me and if you wish to purchase any of my art on various items, please click on the purchase link throughout my site.  Thank you.
